Sunday August 22nd, 2010 Budapest

This morning started nice and early with an 8 AM call for the tour of Budapest. The sun is shining and the sky is brilliant blue – a great start for the day. We are all on Bus 2, so we loaded up and were on our way to explore the Pest side of Budapest. This is the North, most developed and largest side of this city which is divided by the Danube and connected with 10 bridges. We were introduced to many of the buildings, then stopped and got off the bus at the Hero’s Square. This square is dedicated to all the heroes from every generation that has given their life for Hungary. The statue in the middle is very impressive, and the square is surrounded by museums, art galleries and a park. After getting back in the bus we toured around the park, then headed over the` Chain Bridge` to the Buda side of the city. This is the older section, and certainly the hilliest side. We travelled up to the top by bus, then got off and walked around. We were shown the outside of the St Matthew Church and from there up onto Fisherman`s Bastion where we had a beautiful view of the Pest side of the city. We then got to wander around on our own for a little over an hour. Most of us did some shopping and also took in the Folk Festival that was being held. The art work, needlework and other crafts were very impressive.
From the bus – back to the Pest side – we drove around the very impressive parliament buildings, then back to the ship by 11:30.
Once back the ship started to sail – up the Danube – and then for us it was only a short time to lunch, then a tour of the Wheelhouse. The afternoon was taken up by time in the sun, then we spent a fun time learning how to make an original Viennese Apple Strudel followed by a presentation about the Viennese art of drinking coffee in Viennese Coffee Houses. The best part was the wonderful taste of the completed project.
After our welcome Cocktails with the Captain, a Welcome dinner, then evening entertainment which included a Musical Mystery Murder Quiz and musical entertainment by Nick. A great fun and relaxing day.
