Tuesday August 24th, 2010 - Melk Austria

We awoke this morning in another lock. When we looked outside – it was hard to miss the socked in conditions along with heavy rain. Despite this, the picture taking opportunities abound as we sailed through the beautiful Wachau Valley. There were a number of small towns, all with their own distinctive churches and delightful vineyards, as this is Austrian Wine Country. The river is surrounded on both sides with steep cliffs and vineyard covered hills.
At 10:30 we were treated to snacks from Austria, and if you were so inclined – a lovely Austrian beer. Next on the agenda – just in case we were still hungry is lunch, followed by our arrival at Melk. Here we loaded with our rain jackets and umbrellas onto two buses for our tour of the Abbey, however, just as we were to leave – the sun came out and we were treated to a beautiful afternoon tour of this magnificent Abbey. One important thing that was pointed out was the enormous amount of work that has been done on the Abbey over the past 10 years. It is well used by students (from elementary to Sr. Secondary), and of course the Benedictine Monks, but it is also a primary tourist spot, and a maker of several very nice wines. Part of our trip through the Abbey involved looking out from the height of the Abbey to the Valley below—beautiful!
After a tour of the Abbey, some enjoyed a time to rest and have tea in the sun, some wandered through the gardens, while others headed back to the ship by foot. Those of us on foot really enjoyed wandering through the little shops in the town, and managed to obtain a bottle or two of Schnapps.
We were all back to the ship by 3:45 as we set sail at 4 PM. The balance of the afternoon involved a glass of wine or two on the top deck, reading on one of the other decks, or simply relaxing in the lounge. There was also a very good information session on the life of Mozart which was well attended.
Then on to a delightful supper.
At 9 PM a number of our group gathered in the Lounge to engage in a game of “Liar’s Club”. Lila was very convincing as one of the “Liar’s”. And turned out to be the best “Liar” of the evening! A great and fun way to end the evening thanks to our Program Coordinator Marcela. Now for a good night’s sleep to prepare for Wednesday’s Adventures.
