Friday December 3, 2010 - Epcot Centre

We awoke to another beautiful sunny, but chilly day. The morning temperature was only 40F which is really chilly for Florida, and not at all what we had expected. We have yet to see the temperature over 65 F (20 C), but what is really funny is the news reports which encourage parents to make sure their children are wearing jackets.
After a lovely but cool run, Barbara returned to the hotel, and we got ready to go to Epcot Centre. In typical Disney fashion, everything is very well organized – from the parking attendants to the shows. The Epcot centre is less focused on rides and more on information, a few very tame rides and shopping and food. As we entered the park we were entertained by this lovely fountain which was timed to the Christmas Carols that were playing. After a brief stop for coffee, we started by doing the complete circle around the lake – starting at the Mexican Pavilion and going all the way around to the Canadian Pavilion.
I don't think we have ever seen so many strollers or wheelchairs in one place.
Mexico had a boat ride narrated by the Three Caballeros – Donald duck and friends. Then it was on to the Norway, and a display on the Vikings, and a Viking boat ride with a brief film. Next stop - the Chinese Pavilion with a 14 minute Circle-Vision Film. Here we stopped for a couple of spring rolls. Next stop was Germany – where the focus was on Octoberfest, and the availability of some German beer. There was also this neat model of the ‘Romantic Road’ complete with two model trains that wound their way through the model villages. The Italian pavilion featured this great story teller that was telling the Christmas Story from her point of view of a woman in Nazareth at the time of the birth of Christ.
Next was the American Pavilion with a 30 minutes historical show – well done and very patriotic for Americans. Before the show we were entertained with Christmas Carols sung acapella by this talented group of singers.
The Japanese pavilion was most remarkable for the drummers who performed for several minutes. They appeared to be having a great deal of fun while entertaining the audience. The Moroccan Pavilion focused on clothing and henna tattoos, and of course several restaurants.
Outside the French Pavilion was this amazing balancing act, and of course an opportunity to purchase French wine. The United Kingdom Pavilion was delightful in layout, and had a good display of the favourite sons The Beatles.
The last country pavilion was Canada – we were so pleased with the 360 degree film narrated by Martin Short and featuring a truly Canadian Song sung by the winner of Canadian Idol (sorry can’t remember her name).
From the Country pavilions we went into the Imagine Pavilion where we were entertained by the 3-D movie from 1986 – Captain EO with Michael Jackson – it was so good to see him at his best. Then on to other Imagination pavilions showing all sorts of unique technologies and photography. After a bite to eat we moved onto the most dominant Pavilion – the giant sphere called Spaceship Earth. In a short ride we travelled through the history of the earth, and were challenged to consider what we can do to improve the earth. The displays outside the theatre focused on green ways of improving our world. From here we went to the Space Pavilion where we took a training ride to Mars – a great way to end our time at Epcot Centre.
After dinner at TGIFriday’s we headed back to the hotel to put our feet up, check email and do this blog.
