Friday November 18th – Travel to Paracas

This morning we were up bright and early, ready for the last part of our vacation – in Paracas, on the west coast of Peru, south of Lima. To get there we travelled by bus to Juliaca, approximately 1 hr drive north of Puno. After saying a final good-gy to Jaimie, we caught a jet to Lima via Arequipa. Landing in the Airport of Callao (Lima) we collected our luggage and transferred to our bus and onto the Pan American Highway down the west coast to Paracas.
Along the way our guide Barbara filled us in on the various sites along the way. As we travelled south through Lima we say many of the sights like the statue of Jesus from a very different angle, actually looking upwards to the site and the many radio, cell and TV towers along the top of the hill.
As we travelled outside of Lima we encountered a wide diversity of sights, from shantytowns to highly industrial sites, to gated communities. We learned that the price of land along the coast
has increased by more than 10 times in the past 13 years, much of the land being purchased by upper middle class individuals looking for summer retreats, or just places out of the city. In the beach it is not unusual to see the most expensive area, but close by are shantytowns that have sprung up on unclaimed land. Some of the areas were very strange – they appeared to be barren lands but there were a multitude of partially constructed buildings. Barbara explained to us that
these are areas that are being claimed now with the anticipation of a large profit in the future if there is further development or industries such as the natural gas industry that is being developed.
As we travelled south we encountered areas of fruit growing including Tangerine trees, apples,
watermelon and grapes – for what other than wine or Pisco. The town of Pisco has given its name to the liqueur by that name that was developed in this region after the ruling Spaniards
banned the sale and making of Peruvian wine which was running competition to the Spanish wines. By now the sun was beginning to disappear into the Paracas Bay.
Just after 6 we made the turn into our hotel, only to be stopped by construction. A deft backward drive followed by a 180 degree turn, back onto the main road, through the Hilton entrance and we arrived at our absolutely beautiful resort. Several said this was a holiday
within the holiday. The pool looks beautiful and we are right on the beach – pictures to follow.
