Tuesday November 8th Rest and Exploring Lima

This morning was a time to rest and recuperate from our one and/or two days of travel. There was nothing really planned until 2:45 in the afternoon, but many were able to fill the time with exploration and good eating.
Breakfast at the hotel begins at 6:30 and is served – buffet style until 10:30. Art was first at the
breakfast at 6:30, then on for a walking adventure around the hotel. Others gathered from then until 10:30, taking time for a leisurely breakfast of a vast array of food choices, then some
walking to wear off the calories. No one thought they would want lunch, but at 1 PM 21 of us gathered to go to the Grand Bolivar Hotel for a delightful lunch. The set menu included Potato Salad or Eggs with a Pepper Sauce, Beef Stew with Rice or Chicken on Spaghetti, a Pisco Sour and Cheese Cake – all for 20 Sol or about $8 CDN. It was a really nice lunch and we had a good
walk going to and from the restaurant.
After lunch we immediately left for the Larco Herren Museum to explore centuries of centuries of pottery, textiles and gold and silver jewellery which was presented in a most interesting form by our Lima Guide Barbara (not to be mistaken for host Barbara!). The thing that was at least equally attractive to the ancient displays were the multitude of gorgeous foliage including bougainvillea, cactus and numerous other flowering and flowing plants that filled the gardens and covered the walls of the museum.
Then it was back to the hotel to get ready for dinner and an evening of Local Folklore dancing and dining.
The location for our evening’s entertainment and dinner was in the ‘middle class’ part of town which is located within sight of the Pacific Ocean. The traffic getting there was even heavier than what we had encountered earlier, with cars, busses and other vehicles competing for their space of pavement with the hopes of advancing to their destination. The beeping of horns is a constant means of communication of one’s frustration with other drivers, or perhaps just a means of making sure it is working up to expectations.
The restaurant was a large facility in a shopping centre – with many stairs descending to the lower level. There were many tables radiating out from the stage area, each with the flag of the guests’ country, and there were several countries represented including another table of Canadians. The evening dinner was an array of local dishes both fresh and cooked, served buffet style - very tasty and abundant. The entertainment was really excellent. Each group displayed a particular dance from a different region or cultural area of the country. Prior to the live demonstration we were given a video explanation of the dance, the tradition and the costume. The dancers were excellent, culminating in the ‘Scissor Dance’ which was full of energy and athletics.
Heading back to our hotel we took time to take in and photograph the spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean including the giant lighted cross and statue of Jesus which graces the other shore of the bay. We will take this in by daylight tomorrow on our city tour.
