We had an early morning start – packing up and leaving Cape Town by 7 AM. We traveled east along the coast by Gordon Bay, past Cape Hangklip to Hermanus where we took a break for Whale watching, coffee etc. There were a number of Southern Right Whales in the bay who seemed to be putting on a bit of a show for us. We may have even been able to get a good picture or two. Terry & Clark Blanchard and Harry & Barb decided to have coffee and a scone – well we were quite surprised when the scone came with butter, jam, cheese and whip cream! Starbucks could take a lesson from this presentation. We continued our journey East to Riviersonderend and on the way Stuart shared some additional information about the Southern Right Whales and about the seals that frequent these waters. Continuing our eastward trek to the Aloe factory where we enjoyed a lovely lunch and information on their Aloe products.
After lunch we had a short 50Km drive to Mossel Bay – our first glimpse of the Indian Ocean. We enjoyed the sights at the Bartholomew Diaz Museum, then onto Mossel Bay for a photo opportunity of the Indian Ocean. While there we walked up to a cave that had been occupied by the Sand People many centuries ago. The view of the Ocean was magnificent, and we also encountered some cute little furry animals called Dussie’s or Rock Hyrax. These creatures are able to climb with ease up rock faces as they excrete a sticky substance through the pads on their feet.
The next stage of our journey took us north through Robinson Pass into the little Karoo and onto our hotel in Oudtstorn. We enjoyed a great supper of Ostrich, lamb and a few other delicacies and then a quiet evening.
Tomorrow we are on the road again.
