Wednesday May 26th Speyer - Heidelburg

We awoke to a warm but cloudy day having listened to thunder and heavy downfall throughout the night. After a delightful breakfast we were off to Speyer – about 30 KM away – to see the lovely Romanesque Cathedral. We wandered throughout the Cathedral which has beautiful grounds, an imposing ceiling and beautiful frescos on the walls. The baptismal font is dedicated to all Christians, Jews, Moslems and Atheists.

Next stop was Heidelberg where Lidia arranged for us to have a tour of the Heidelberg Castle. This imposing structure has been destroyed four times in its history and there are still many parts of the castle which are only partially restored. Our guide Herbert a volunteer was extremely well versed on all aspects of the history of the Castle. He showed us the largest wine barrel ever!

From there we drove into town and had a couple of hours to wander around and have lunch on our own and a few purchased much needed umbrellas. Heidelberg is a delightful city with one of the oldest Universities in Germany.

Then we went on to Weinpreisliste Winery with the host family who have owned th winery for 65 years. for a taste of 5 (or more) wonderful wines. They also cleansed our palates with hearty bread, cheese and pepperoni. No wonder several bottles of wine were purchased including a number of a delightful 1976 sweet white wine – yummy. Just before getting on the bus we spotted this little church high on the hill – dedicated to St Anne.

Back to our hotel for dinner and a good night’s sleep – ready for an early morning.
