Sunday January 11th, 2009 Blue Mountains Katoomba to Canberra

As promised, I will fill you in on last evening after posting the blog. We drove around the town, particularly on the Blue Mountain Drive – stopping at several view points along the way – absolutely magnificent scenery, including these very unusual flowers, and a contrasting very tiny flower. Then we enjoyed a lovely Thai dinner and were back to the motel to pack up to get an early start to this morning.
As it is Sunday, and we saw a Uniting Church just down the block with a 9 AM service we decided to go, but like our other attempt – the church was not holding a service, but had combined with another congregation in the next town (only a few minutes away). We drove to the town, and went up and down a few streets, then at 5 to 9 we gave up and started following the signs to Sydney. Much to our surprise at exactly 9 AM we drove right next to the church, so we went in. A small congregation being led by a lay leader, it has a range of ages from two young girls just under ten, to several much older individuals. We were greeted warmly, enjoyed the service and hospitality after, then were on our way to Canberra.
It is a lovely day today – lots of sun and back to the 28 C we have been enjoying before the last 2 much cooler days. We stopped on the way to send Rick Birthday greetings. The drive was interesting, with lots of agricultural land – mostly cattle and dairy farms, but also a wind farm on a hill, and a couple of wineries. By 3 we were checked into our hotel which is just north of the city. We actually over shot it at first and then back tracked after getting instructions from the Information Booth.
It is a lovely resort – part of the Rydges chain of hotels – Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort. The buildings are all one story, and there are lots of trees and bushes, and a nice pool with a poolside pub and restaurant. We are right on the main road into town, so we decided to save our touring for tomorrow as we are here for two nights, and enjoy the pool this afternoon.
We also watched the mob or a court of Kangaroos that occupy the field right behind our resort. Thank goodness for zoom lenses.
After a dinner of Pizza – cooked in the resort’s wood burning Pizza oven, we went for a walk around – camera in hand. It had cooled off quite a bit, so there was lots of animal activity around. The Mob or Court of Kangaroos had come much closer, and we counted 70 in all in the field. We noticed this one mum with a Joey in her pouch, and these two ‘teenagers’ having a kick boxing match in the back field.
Around the front of the resort we came across these two Crimson Rosellas that were working on a piece of bread in the bushes close to the pool. We also saw this delightful Superb Fairy-Wren that wiggles its tail every time it lands.
Then as we were about to go back to our room one of the other guests told us about a mother and baby wallabies in one of the yards. We were able to get this picture using an ISO rating of 800 and the zoom lens. Absolutely adorable wouldn't you say? Then as we were almost back to our room we caught this lovely sunset through the gum trees. A lovely end to another great day.
