The plan was to take the coastal route south and east from Canberra down as far as Lakes Entrance which is located in Victoria, on the south east corner of Australia. We chose this route for the scenery, as it would have been much shorter to simply head straight from Canberra to Melbourne.
Our first stop was Casey’s Beach – just south of Bateman’s Bay. Here we are on the East coast, about 200 KM south of Sydney. During the trip today we went through valley’s, up steep hills, along the coast line and through lots of ranches with beef cattle, occasionally sheep and some alpaca. Later in the afternoon as we entered Victoria we were definitely in rain forest areas.
After arriving at our hotel which is located across the street from a lovely bay, we went into the motel pool for a bit of a cool down (it was 34 C when we arrived), then walked down the shoreline. Here we had time to admire this carving commemorating the First World War veterans. It was carved in 1998 from the stump of a tree that had died and become quite dangerous due to its proximity to the main street, but no one wanted to see it completely gone. There are several of these carvings down the street,
and several of the magnificent living trees as well. We also watched this black swan
as it helped itself to the water flowing out of the drainage pipe on the beach. We understand that there are often dolphins and seals in the bay, but unfortunately did not see any.
We then found ourselves at the Lakes Entrance Bowls Club (a private club-casino, that allows guests from away) for dinner (recommended by our host). After a very nice dinner we walked back to the motel – admiring the flora and fauna along the way, including this neat looking bush which a local told us was a Banksias ( but when we looked this flower up – it was the name of the shrub with the long green flower that we were trying to identify earlier.
This evening we were out admiring the southern night sky.
