We traveled North to the Tarbert Ferry to cross the Shannon River
into County Clare. On the way we learned a great deal about the horse breeding industry in Ireland. One of the towns we passed through was Tralee, and we learned about the story behind “The Rose of Tralee”. We also learned about the oak forests that have been buried for centuries in the Bogs, and the use that is being made of this unique wood. Once off the ferry we passed through Spanish Point where the Spanish Armada suffered many casualties in the 1580’s. The area now boasts wonderful golf links.
Then on to the Cliffs of Moher,
which were absolutely spectacular. Everyone ventured at least part of the way to the top, and all who have hair longer than 1 inch came back with the
windblown look.
Our next photostop was Burran
which is an area of karstil limestone which has allowed a huge variety of plant life to thrive amongst the rocks
. We drove on and made sure to stop and take a picture of our first glimpse of Galway Bay.
Our last stop before arriving at our hotel was the Rathbaun Farm
where we enjoyed great soup, breads, scones and cake. After we were given a demonstration of sheep shearing
and Mary and Anna
had the opportunity to feed one of the lambs. We also watched a sheep herding demonstration, and generally felt very welcome. This evening was casual, with a chance to go into Galway.
