Tuesday - Connemara Tour

This morning we headed out of Galway to explore the Connemara Region. We enjoyed the magnificent scenery on the way to our first photo opportunity—the Killary Fjord. This magnificent Fjord is busy with Mussel Farms and cruise boats. We learned that during the war years the German U-Boats found a safe haven in these deep waters. We were very happy that Mary’s little trip did not result in any permanent damage.
During our drive George had to watch to avoid hitting the many sheep that just wonder out onto the roadway. We also got the opportunity to see the peat that has been freshly cut and stacked to dry in the fields. We learned a little more about the Potato Famine in the 1850’s.
A short drive further on and we were at the Kylemore Abbey. Most enjoyed a walk through the gardens which are just beginning to show their spring colors.
It was very interesting to see the reconstructed Glass & Vine Houses (Green Houses). There are still many that have only the brick base.
The Abbey itself is a magnificent structure both inside and out. Several of the rooms are fully furnished with pieces for the period. The balance of the facility is utilized as a school which is set to close in 2010. The Chapel has recently been refurbished and was reopened in 1995 as an active place of worship. As Mary stated - “This is the kind of a place that makes the saying “Peace be With You” real”. Carolyn commented that “If I wanted to become a Nun—this is where I would want to be.” It is a beautiful, peaceful place.
After a quick lunch we were off to the Marble Factory to gain an appreciation of the Connemara Marble. Then we were back to Galway and the chance to spend a bit of time in the city before our Medieval Dinner at Dunguaire Castle. This proved to be a really fun evening with great food, a sample of Mead and lots of wonderful entertainment. Pictures tomorrow!
