Saturday - Ring of Kerry

This morning we started out nice and early to go to Moriarty’s, a wonderful shop with beautiful clothing and other things Irish. As the first guests we were treated to Irish coffee – a great way to start the morning. After another assault on our credit cards, we were on our way around the Ring of Kerry, or the Dingle Peninsula. Our next stop was Killogin to see the statue of King Puck – a goat (different each year) that is crowned King of the three day fair that happens each August.
Making our way around the Peninsula on narrow windy roads, we then came to a Bog Farm to learn about peat and to view living conditions and implements used to harvest the peat. We also met a pair of wolf hounds and family of Bog Ponies (one very young). These are an endangered species that are being carefully bred to save them for the future. Along with viewing this community some of us also enjoyed another Irish Coffee – touted to be the ‘best in Ireland’. It was very tasty!
Continuing along our way – we stopped at a stone bridge, and took pictures with a couple of gentlemen, their donkeys and their dogs. The scenery just kept becoming more beautiful. We checked out the birthplace of Daniel O’Connell who was instrumental in bringing about freedom of religion to Ireland, and at the same place took in the sculpture of the 4 monks in a boat – but that is another story.
Next stop was lunch at a delightful restaurant decorated by the owner/artist who has painted scenes from the Ring of Kerry all around the walls. After lunch we completed the circle tour back through the Killarney National Park, again being overwhelmed by the beauty of the area.
We arrived back at our hotel mid afternoon, and as supper was not until 7:30, we had time to explore the town of Killarney and to make any necessary purchases, including ATM stops. Tomorrow should be a busy day.
